Ghana has a population of around 25 million. This gives it a population density of 88 inhabitants to the square kilometre. 51% of the population live in an urban environment. The main towns are Accra, the capital (2.3 mio inhabitants), Kumasi (1.8 mio) and Takoradi (450'000). There are ten administrative districts in the country: the Greater Accra Region, Central Region, Eastern Region, Volta Region, Brong Ahafo Region, Northern Region, Western Region, Ashanti Region, Upper East Region and Upper West Region. The population of Ghana is made up of something like 75 different tribes, with as many different languages being spoken. English is the country’s official language. The main religions are Christianity (63%), animism (21%) and Islam (16%).
